Hey everybody, we haven't done a blog in a while, I guess, but sometimes you fall down into a hole and it takes awhile to climb out. So in a couple of hours I'll be putting some transmission fluid in my 98 Cheyenne and Hollin and I will be heading up to Denton to play at Dan's silverleaf. Tonight will be our first time at Dan's and we're really excited to be playing there. What's even better is that we'll be opening for our good friend Max Stalling. Max is one our favorite songwriters not to mention one of our favorite people. Our extended family is from Pearsall which is not far from Crystal City where Max grew up so we have some background in common. It's aways great to hear Max's band which has the newly added Bryce Clarke on guitar. Bryce first was getting into the scene when he was about 12 or 13 years old. He's really starting to realize his brilliance as an instumentalist. What I'm trying to say is: "That kid has some serious finesse".
Last weekend we opened for the Gougers at the Mucky Duck in Houston which was alot of fun. Their guitar player Lance ran sound for us. The Duck has one of the best house PA's around. The Gougers had a great crowd and they seemed to respond pretty well to our stuff. We sold some CD's and coozies between ours and the Gougers sets. Their set was great as always. Their songs are vivid paintings of small towns. They capture those small town situatiions and realtionships between people in an elegant way. There were no hotel accomodations in Houston because of the rodeo so we ended up in Cleveland in a motel that was very nice. Hollin and I rehearsed some new songs in the motel room and I've been working up my chops on a mandolin I just got.
Then we were off to Lufkin to play a 25th anniversary party for Brian and Suzanne Austin. We tooled around Lufkin for a little while and then loaded in for the party. The Austins are such cool people and it was a pleasure to be a part of their celebration. It was a blast and it was very fun to see Brian get down to some Van Halen. Suzanne got down very nicely to some 'Off the Wall" era Michael Jackson. Then we had the long trek back to Bandera where we played the Bandera Salloon.
We were the featured guests and we also shared the stage with songwriter Donnie Blanz, Lee Winright and many other of the great artists in Bantucky. It's great to see such a cool and great scene emerge in our hometown. You won't find another small town in Texas or anywhere else for that matter with as fertile a music scene as Bandera has right now.
I just looked at the time and we've got to fly down the highway. You want me to get you a kolache from the Czech Stop on the way home tomorrow morning? Talk to you soon,
